It's easy! Just sign up for the class (MUS 95G)using Studentlink Web Reg or the TeSS phone system. Or, if you don't need to take the class for credit, just come!
The Gospel Choir meets Tuesday and Wednesday evenings (and you can come to one or both classes). See the Schedule of Classes for more information.
Almost anyone can sing! All you have to do is find your voice. Even if you're not a diva, Gospel Choir can help you to be more confident with your own singing abilites. If you need extra help, there are plenty of people to do the job. And whether or not you become a star, it's just fun!
You can take Gospel Choir for 2 or 3 UCSD units (P/NP credit only). You can be in either night's class, but you can only get credit for ONE class (in other words, you can't get twice as much credit for coming both nights!). However, two unit students have to attend two concerts during the quarter and three unit students have to attend three. You can also audit the class for zero units and just show up!
Even non-UCSD students can join the UCSD Gospel Choir. Although you can't get college credit for being in our choir, you can join us in singing and having a good time.
You can take MUS 95G Gospel Choir for credit a total of six times at most undergraduate colleges (check with your academic advisor if you're not sure!), but you can be a member of the choir (without getting credit!) for as long as you want!
The Scantron test is something new starting Spring Quarter 1999. Students must pass this test to pass the class, but students will take the test until they pass it. It involves putting lines to songs in order so that we can be sure there are no "watermelon" singers at our quarter concert! Don't stress about it, though -- it is NOT a "MIDTERM."
Nope. Just classes, concerts, the scantron test and a low-pressure singing test (don't worry, you're up there with other people -- this is not a solo!). This means that we DON'T HAVE CLASS during finals week!!
Yes! Almost all of the P/NP grade is based upon attendance, BOTH in class and during concerts. Even if you think you know all the songs, if you are taking Gospel Choir for credit, you must attend class. You must attend no less than seven classes throughout the quarter, even if you added late (so if you add third week, you are still responsible for attendance first and second weeks!). Any additional missed classes must be made up by eighth week. Missing classes isn't a good idea, since information about concerts and songs can change weekly. Besides, class really is FUN!
Yes, members of all performance classes must buy (and sell or give away) three tickets to their quarter concert (Mandeville) every quarter that they are enrolled in the class (every quarter that they are using the class for credit). Tickets are $5 each. If you do not buy these tickets, you are in danger of being dropped from the class, not by the TAs or Ken but by the Department! (Winter Quarter concerts for Martin Luther King Jr. Day are free, so the ticket rule doesn't apply during the winter.) Tickets can be purchased starting the second week of class. Checks must be made payable to "U.C. Regents." At the door, tickets are $3 for students, $5 for the general public.
To make up absences, you can attend class on the other night (Tuesday, if you are signed up for Wednesday's class, or Wednseday, if you are signed up for Tuesday's class) or additional concerts (talk to Ken first!). Don't crowd the attendance table if you are making up a class -- you will be called up to the table during roll (until then, sit anywhere in your section!).
The ensemble is a smaller group of singers who stay after class for up to an hour every week and learn additional songs. They are exempt from the singing test, but have to perform at least two songs in a group of 10-30 during concerts. Ensembles perform their additional songs in at least two concerts during the quarter. To be a part of the ensemble, stay after class and see what it's like!
Although we don't recommend planning on it, the minimum passing requirements are as follows:

- Make up ALL absences by 8th week! To make up absences, you can attend class on the other night (Tuesday, if you are signed up for Wednesday's class, or Wednseday, if you are signed up for Tuesday's class) or additional concerts (talk to Ken first!).
- Pass the Scantron and singing tests!
- Attend at least TWO concerts during the quarter. You cannot make up concerts!
